Statutory sick pay changes in April 2026
By David Coward
There were some important changes to the statutory sick pay scheme (SSP) which took effect on 6 April 2026.
In summary, the SSP scheme entitles eligible employees who are absent from work due to sickness and who meet qualifying conditions to receive a weekly SSP payment for up to 28 weeks in any period of incapacity over a three-year period.
The main change is that SSP becomes payable on the first day of absence rather than after three days. In addition, SSP can be claimed by employees whose earnings are less than the national insurance lower earnings limit, and the amount paid is the lower of the prescribed weekly rate and 80% of the employee’s normal weekly earnings, which will predominantly benefit lower paid employees.
The prescribed SSP rate increased on 6 April 2026 from £118.75 per week to £123.25 per week.
