Important changes to Family Law from 22 April 2014

From 22 April 2014 a new Single Family Court will deal with all family proceedings, and the Children and Families Act 2014 brings in changes to both public and private law in children cases. These changes include:

  • Attendance at a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting will become compulsory before a court application is made regarding disputes over finances or children (subject to a few limited exceptions)
  • Applications will be made to one court, the Family Court. It will be able to sit anywhere in England and Wales and magistrates and judges will work alongside each other, hearing cases of appropriate complexity.
  • “Contact” and “Residence” orders are abolished and will be replaced by “Child Arrangement Orders”. These regulate who a child lives with and when they have contact with another person
