A Children and Families Bill was announced in the Queen’s speech at the opening of Parliament recently. Sampson Coward welcome this legislation to help reduce delays in the family justice system.
The main points are a 6 month statutory time limit for the completion of care cases, the requirement for parents to consider resolving disputes using mediation, and the introduction of ‘shared parenting’ to help children maintain a relationship with both parents after the family has separated.
However, the Sampson Coward Family Law team feel it should be acknowledged that resources will be required to implement the changes – for example mediation is not something which suits everybody, and emotions can run 'high'.
